Want to find out more about Onslaught, the latest competitive 7v7 Tier X game mode announced for World of Tanks? In today's episode of Developer Diaries, we're sitting down with two of our experienced game designers, Dima and Yan, to learn more about how its new concept and gameplay mechanics were developed.
Read some of the highlights from their Q&A below.
What is Onslaught?
It is a dynamic, competitive, 7v7 game mode that can be played either solo or in platoons. It also has a ranking system. Onslaught will only be available for Tier X vehicles, but only Collector's and tech tree vehicles can be used. Special vehicles like Chieftains will not be usable in this mode.
How does the new ranking system work?
Every time you win a battle, you will gain some Rating Points. Losing a battle makes you lose Rating Points. Performing well in your team earns you additional Rating Points, ranking lower in a battle earns you a little less.
The same applies for losses. Performing well on the losing team helps you lose less Rating Points.
There will be 7 ranks in Onslaught. Five will be common, two will be additional. These ranks will be called Debutant, Iron, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Champion, and Legend.
What kind of rewards can be earned?
Climbing the ranks and being the best gives you rewards like unique customizations as proof of your caliber.
Effort gets rewarded as well - rewards can be earned as you reach milestones. Rewards in this category include consumables, equipment, and more.
Are there new features?
There is an anti-AFK system in place. Every time a person leaves the battle, whether it is the lobby stage or at the end of the battle, they will lose a huge number of Rating Points.
Everyone who stayed in the battle will automatically gain more Rating Points than a player who did nothing.
Players who leave matches will be banned from the mode temporarily. The more battles rage quitters leave, the more time they are given time to chill out.
What does it take to stay at the top?
A new system is now in place in top ranks to prevent inactivity. Players won't be able to continually rank high by playing for a few days and stopping for the rest of the period.
Each game you play gives you an activity charge. For example, playing 10 matches gives you 10 charges. If you stop playing the next day, you lose a charge. When all the charges are gone, the system will take away points from your rank.
This will help active players to catch up in rank. To reward activeness, points will be received daily for staying in top tier ranks.
Tell us more about the rating system.
A rating-based matchmaker will be introduced. The first five ranks contain four Divisions each - A, B, C, and D. The matchmaker will try to matchmake the most ideal battle.
If a player were in Gold division D, they will be matched with people from the same division. However, if no match is available, opponents of a similar rank will be picked.
The first 5 ranks will not have their points considered in matchmaking. The race gets serious towards the last 2 ranks - Champion and Legend. There's a leaderboard. Legends are the top 10% of Champions.
Can I platoon with players outside my rank?
First of all, we will definitely limit the ability of players to platoon outside their rank. So if you're in the top tier, you would not be able to invite a guy from the lowest-ranking tier, and go with him into battle.
There will be a Prime Time where players can play to prevent match fixing in top tier ranks.
What are Super Platoons?
You can create your own seven-man team. That's a Super Platoon. Most of the time, Super Platoons will be matched against other Super Platoons. Solo players who do get matched against a Super Platoon will earn additional rating points.
What are some of the Role Skills vehicles will have?
Each map in Onslaught has special Points of Interest called Artillery Headquarters and Communication Center. Having captured a Point of Interest, you'll be able to activate a unique Tactical Skill.
If you capture the Artillery Headquarters, you can command an Artillery Strike on the selected area, stunning and causing damage to enemy vehicles.
Capturing the Comms Center allows you to use Divisional Radar. Using this makes all enemy vehicles visible for 3 seconds.
Abilities charge over time. For example, the E-100 can increase effective HP of itself and its team. And the E-50M has an ability that gives it faster reloads.
