Tank Commanders!
The last week of WGL APAC-Asia's Qualifiers is now over. The Top 4 teams in the Gold Series rankings table will now advance to the Playoffs stage, where they will battle once again to earn a spot in the Grand Finals.
Excited yet? We are too! But let's not get too ahead of ourselves yet. Here's what happened in last week's matches - watch the videos or read about it all below.
Match 1: NVIDIA Aces vs NUMB |
---|
In game number 1 on Mines, NVIDIA Aces opted for an interesting strategy of choosing four T69s and attempting a push down the middle of the map. However, that only resulted in killing a single tier 8 tank from NUMB while losing all of theirs at the end.Game number 2 on Ensk was essentially a complete turnaround with NVIDIA Aces not losing a single Tier VIII tank. Game number 3 on Cliffs much resembled game number 2 between the Aces and NUMB, but with very fast-paced and action packed moments as we see the trend with light tanks on this map pan out. Game number 4 however was the deciding match that leaned in favour of the Aces, giving them a much needed victory on Himmelsdorf and three more points in the Gold series. Match 1 Winner |
Match 2: GASHPLUS_NightEagles vs PVP Super Friends |
---|
The first game of the match was played on Mines, which saw the NightEagles win in a decisive fashion and producing a bit of an upset as a consequence. A clutch draw occured in game number 2 on Cliffs however, with only seconds remaining on the clock, putting the NightEagles in the lead 2:1. But in trying to play to their one point advantage on Steppes, it seems that the NightEagles may simply have not been familiar enough with the map, and were thus thoroughly countered by PVP Super Friends, bringing the score back to 2:2. The final game on Prokhorovka was eventually won by PVP, sealing the NightEagles' fate. Match 2 Winner |
Match 3: Intense Honking vs Charlotte Tiger |
---|
Intense Honking began the match with a strategy that was meant to counter-play their opponents, by placing two T69s in their composition vs. Charlotte Tigers' lineup composed entirely of AMX 13 90s. Unfortunately, the first tank in the game to fall was a T69 from Intense Honking and things slowly began to spiral out of control from then onwards. It seems clear now that despite Intense Honking's attempt to defeat their opponents by counterpicking them at the tank selection stage, Charlotte Tiger relied on superior tactics instead to pull out the win. In game number two, the order of the day was on Mines and Charlotte Tiger took the victory with only the loss of their two T1 Cunninghams, bringing the score to 2:0. At this point, Intense Honking would have to win the next three games to win the series. Unfortunately for them, game number 3 on Ruinberg ended in a draw even after Intense Honking managed to destroy all of Charlotte Tiger’s Tier VIII tanks, and thus the latter won the set 3:1. Match 3 Winner |
Match 1: PVP Super Friends vs Intense Honking |
---|
With both teams not willing to budge in the first game on Himmelsdorf, it eventually ended in a draw with only a handful of tanks falling. Game number 2 on Ensk was similarly slow-paced from the start, until the last two minutes when Intense Honking realized they had destroyed both of PVP's T1 Cunninghams. Intense Honking instantly switched to an aggressive play, but to no avail - when the last second elapsed, there was still one Tier 8 tank remaining on PVP's side. Game number 3 on Mines saw Intense Honking sitting cosily on the south side of the map waiting for their opponents to appear before them, but despite the 9.3 patch making it more difficult to put an AMX 13 90 on the east side of the map, we saw PVP put Hydrorex in the gunner’s seat in more ways than one. The strategic part of this game came when PVP realized that none of the tanks on Intense Honking had the turret depression necessary to aim at Hydrorex. It was a slow and painful defeat and dethroning from Intense Honking. The end score was 3:2 in favor of PVP. Match 1 Winner |
Match 2: GASHPLUS_NightEagles vs Charlotte Tiger |
---|
Game number 1 on Ruinberg was exceptionally exciting due to the rapid exchange of fire on both sides, leaving only 1 Tier VIII tank and a single T1 Cunningham remaining as the clock hit 0:00. In game number 2 on Mines, we see Gashplus_NightEagles suffering a setback after three minutes by losing a single AMX 13 90, then an eventual whittling down of all T1 tanks until none were left. The exchange was a bit frantic as we saw a 4-3 Tier VIII tank lead from the NightEagles drop to a measly 1-3, ushering in a draw. With the score at 2:2, both sides would have sweaty palms if it weren’t for the fact that neither side had anything to lose as game number 3 was a straight up rush on Prokhorovka that ended with the NightEagles claiming victory. Match 2 Winner |
Match 3: Team Efficiency vs ELong |
---|
The first game was fast and frantic on Cliffs, lasting only three minutesand putting ELONG in the lead, sporting new tanks for maximum damage output. Game number 2 was played on Ensk and unlike the first one, this was a complete turnaround in favor of Team Efficiency, which allowed to them to claim victory with only one tank remaining on the field and bringing the score back to 1:1. Game number three on Prokhorovka was even shorter than game number 1 and even more decisive of a victory for ELong. However, game number 4 brought the series back to a tied 2:2 for Team Efficiency, giving them more of a fighting chance than ever before. Which was why it was slightly disappointing to discover that game number 5 on Prokhorovka proved to be somewhat anti-climactic for both sides. As we could plainly see, neither side was willing to make a decisive move, forcing the series into a draw. Match 3 Winner |
