Who was General Sherman?
ExpandWilliam Tecumseh Sherman served as a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Opinion is split on Sherman among historians. To some, he was a mentally unstable, heavy-drinking barbarian who waged war on enemy troops and civilians alike. Others paint him as a professional soldier who spared civilians and sought to end the bloody Civil War by any—and all—means necessary and ensure future generations would never wish to wage it.
A graduate of the famed West Point Military Academy, Sherman gained notoriety for his "hard war" approach. As his armies conquered land, they would burn buildings and plantations, destroy railroads and forests, seize food and livestock—in short, remove anything the enemy could use to wage or support war. These tactics took a psychological toll on civilians and eroded their support for the conflict.
Sherman's tactics were put to full use during his famous November-December 1864 "March to the Sea." After torching almost half of the city of Atlanta, Georgia, he led an army 285 miles east to the coast city of Savannah—destroying and raiding along the way. The destination city, however, remained untouched and was presented to President Abraham Lincoln as a Christmas gift. Scorched-earth tactics were used in the subsequent march north to Charleston, South Carolina in early 1865. In April, Confederate forces surrendered, and the bloodiest war in American history ended.
British World War I veteran and noted historian B.H. Liddell Hart claimed Sherman was a master of the "indirect approach" of warfare. It takes the stance an army is mobile, fluid, and can strike and exploit enemy weaknesses whenever they appear. Hart penned several books on warfare strategy and believed World War II commanders studied and were influenced by his analyses of Sherman's tactics. American General George S. Patton, German General Heinz Guderian, and German General Erwin Rommel were mentioned for using the Civil War general's tactics, albeit with mechanized armor.
Ironically, the M4 Sherman tank line replaced the M3 Lee. The latter was named after Civil War Confederate General Robert E. Lee.

M4 Improved Offers

Thanks to a more powerful engine than the standard M4, Improved is very fast, maneuverable, and perfect for flanking adversaries. Truth in advertising!
