At 06:00 on March 23, 1943, the German forces headed into the El Guettar valley with 50 tanks of Broich's 10th Panzer. They were met with the U.S. artillery and anti-tank guns, which included 31 M10 tank destroyers. The Allies destroyed 30 of the Axis tanks and the 10th Panzer retreated at 09:00. The 10th Panzer made a second attempt at 16:45, but the U.S. artillery disrupted the attack, inflicting heavy losses on the 10th Panzer, and forcing them to retreat once more.

A week later, on the afternoon of March 30th, the "Benson Force", made up of the 1st and 9th Infantry Divisions, and Combat Command 1/3 of the U.S. 1st Armored Division, attacked Hill 369 and Hill 772, two Italian strongholds. It was a tough battle, leading the 1st to clear Hill 369 on April 3rd. But the battle on Hill 772 continued, and the Italian Commander, General Messe, called in support from the German 21st Panzer Division. This slowed down the Allies' advancement, and the lines remained largely static after.
