M54 Renegade

In the early 1950s, the U.S. began developing a successor to the M48, and several types of prototype tanks were built using its chassis. One such prototype resulted in the VIII M54 Renegade  which never entered service. Let's take a closer look at its performance in World of Tanks.

Vehicle Summary

The VIII M54 Renegade  is a versatile heavy tank that can suit many situations and possesses many strong characteristics.

It possesses top class DPM for a Tier VIII heavy tank. This is the result of not only great penetration and good alpha damage, but also excellent gun handling. Its excellent aiming time allows for accurate shots even right after stopping. Combined with a respectable gun depression angle of -10°, the Renegade has few shortcomings in this department.

Additionally, it also has excellent maneuverability. With a particularly high acceleration and reverse speed, and is capable of leaping quickly out from behind obstacles to ambush opponents.

Armor can be said to be this vehicle's Achilles heel. While the frontal turret armor is solid, the frontal hull armor can be easily penetrated with just 220mm of plating. Additionally, the large machine gun turret on the top of the vehicle is an exposed weak spot. Even a shot from a lower tier tank can easily penetrate it.

Other notable characteristics include its very long visibility range of 400 meters. This is the highest value among Tier VIII heavy tanks. Not only does it have excellent mid-range spotting performance, but when fighting on the front lines, it can spot tank destroyers hiding behind enemy lines.

Commanders must always be aware that even in a hull down position, there is always a prime target on this vehicle's turret. Even at a distance, lower tier tanks can penetrate if they land just right. Since the vulnerable patch is on the right side of the tank's turret, it is best to orient the vehicle accordingly when crossing known lines of fire. Take advantage of the Renegade's gun performance to surprise your opponents from behind cover, combining the maneuverability of a medium tank with the firepower of a heavy.

Strengths:

  • Excellent acceleration and reverse speeds
  • Top class DPM for its Tier and class
  • Excellent elevation / depression angles
  • Good penetration of conventional AP rounds
  • Excellent gun handling
  • Excellent visibility range

Weaknesses:

  • Large machine gun top of the turret acts as a weakspot
  • Hull armor is lacking for a heavy tank

The recommended setup aims to strengthen the vehicle's already considerable firepower while raising overall performance in other areas.

The Survivability slot should be equipped with an Improved Ventilator to raise the overall performance of the crew. The second slot is for a Gun Rammer to shorten the loading speed. Finally, the third slot is for a Vertical Stabilizer for even more firing accuracy.

Prioritize learning skills in the following order:

  1. Commander: "Sixth Sense" Perk
  2. Everyone: "Repair" Skill
  3. Driver: "Off-Road Driving" Skill

It is essential for the Commander to acquire the "Sixth Sense" perk - this should be your top priority. The next most urgent skill/perk is the "Repair" skill for every member of your crew. This tank is prone to needing repairs, so it is essential that everyone except the Commander learn this skill first.

The "Off-Road Driving" skill improves mobility, which is one of the main characteristics you'll rely on when playing the Renegade. Although the maximum speed of this vehicle is considerably high, this is highly dependant of the terrain. With this skill, the speed penalty from driving off-road will be mitigated, allowing you to move into position sooner.

With the most vital skills learned, consider learning the "Brothers In Arms" perk for all crew members for a good all-round boost to performance. Since the perk does not take effect until it is fully learned, it is recommended to start learning the final row of skills first to make it easier since the skills' effectiveness kicks in as you learn it. Once all crew members have fully learned the third perk/skill, you can use gold to reset the perk/skill and instantly learn the "Brothers In Arms" perk then learn the fourth row of skills again.

Repair

This Skill accelerates repairs to damaged modules.

Effectiveness increases with skill level.

Camouflage

This Skill reduces vehicle visibility.

Effectiveness increases with skill level.

Firefighting

This Skill enhances firefighting abilities.

Effectiveness increases with skill level.

Brothers in Arms

This Perk improves major qualifications and all Skills for the entire Crew. The Perk is more effective when combined with Improved Ventilation, Extra Combat Rations, Chocolate, Case of Cola, and Strong Coffee.

This Perk comes into effect after it reaches 100% for the entire Crew.

Band of Brothers

This Perk improves major qualifications and all Skills for the entire Crew.

This is a Perk. Perks only take effect once it reaches 100%.

This works even if another crew member has acquired the "Brothers in Arms" Perk.

Sixth Sense

This Perk allows the Commander to identify whether the vehicle is detected by the enemy.

Sixth Sense comes into effect after it reaches 100%.

Recon

This Skill increases Maximum View Range. Recon is more effective if observation devices are damaged, or when combined with Situational Awareness, Coated Optics and Binocular Telescope.

Effectiveness increases with skill level.

Mentor

This Skill provides additional XP to all Crew members except the Commander.

The amount of Experience increases with Skill level.

Eagle Eye

Eagle Eye comes into effect after it reaches 100%.

Jack of All Trades

This Skill enables the Commander to master every qualification and replace knocked-out Crew members.

Snap Shot

This Skill improves accuracy during turret rotation. Snap Shot is more effective when combined with Vertical Stabilizer.

The effect increases with Skill level. If two Gunners have the Skill, only the higher rating is effective.

Designated Target

This Perk makes targeted enemy vehicles visible for two more seconds.

Designated Target comes into effect after it reaches 100%. If two Gunners have the Perk, the effect is not cumulative.

Deadeye

This Perk increases the chance to critically damage enemy vehicle modules and Crew.

Deadeye comes into effect after it reaches 100%, and is only effective with AP and APCR shells.

Preventative Maintenance

The Perk reduces the chance of engine fire by preventing gas or oil leakage in the engine compartment.

The Perk comes into effect after it reaches 100%.

Controlled Impact

This Skill decreases ramming damage to your vehicle and increases ramming damage to an enemy vehicle. Controlled Impact is effective only while both vehicles are in motion, except when two allied vehicles collide.

The effect increases with Skill level.

Situational Awareness

This Skill extends View Range. Situational Awareness is more effective when combined with Recon.

The effect increases with Skill level. If two Radio Operators have the Skill, only the higher rating is effective.

Safe Stowage

This Perk increases ammo rack durability (the shells do not come into contact with each other).  This Perk is more effective when combined with "Wet" Ammo Rack.

Safe Stowage comes into effect after it reaches 100%. If two Loaders have the Perk, the effect is not cumulative.

Adrenaline Rush

This Perk accelerates gun loading if the vehicle has less than 10% of its hit points left. Adrenaline Rush is more effective when combined with Gun Rammer.

Adrenaline Rush comes into effect after it reaches 100%. If two Loaders have the Perk, the effect is not cumulative.

Intuition

This Perk creates a chance that the proper shell is already loaded when switching between shell types. The gun must be completely loaded before the Perk can be used again.

Intuition comes into effect after it reaches 100%. If two Loaders have the Perk, the effect is not cumulative.
