Prepare to do battle in the month of July, because we have a rare tank waiting for you! A new multi-part mission will be available to all starting tomorrow, with lots of objectives to achieve and even more rewards that await upon completion. Finish all of them before the mission expires at the end of the month, and the KV-220 will be yours for free.

Playing on the map 'Prokhorovka' will also provide a slight EXP boost for the whole of this month, as July marks the anniversary of the actual battle. If you'd like to learn more about it, do spend a few moments reading about it in the relevant section below.

History Spotlight: Battle of Prokhorovka

The Battle of Prokhorovka was in fact only a single engagement in the Battle of Kursk, which was larger in scope. However, the sheer number of participants in the battle and the consequences that stemmed from it were reason enough to feature Prokhorovka as a major event by itself.

Prior to the Battle of Prokhorovka itself, German forces in the area were in the process of conducting Operation Citadel, with the aim of removing Soviet presence in the area in and around Kursk. The Soviet units that were in the area first adopted a defensive strategy, doing their best to obstruct the German advance while buying enough time to amass enough firepower to deliver a counterattack.

Soon enough, an opportunity presented itself near the town of Prokhorovka. On 12th July 1943, the Germans were mounting yet another offensive when the Soviets began to answer in kind. Tiger I's and T-34s swarmed the battlefield as the the sound of gunfire filled the air.

Prokhorovka is usually named 'the biggest tank engagement in human history'. Judging from eyewitness accounts, one can definitely understand why. The sound of tanks firing at each other dominated the battlefield, with the thick smoke of burnt gunpowder present in every breath. It was simply chaos - all in all, around 2,000 tanks crashed against each other on that small stretch of land near Prokhorovka that day.

The true victor of the battle has been the subject of much debate, but there is no doubt that the engagement was the last offensive action taken by the Germans. After the events at Prokhorovka, they found themselves lacking in resources and personnel needed to complete the push through the Soviet defensive line. With each subsequent counterattack by the Soviets, they began to retreat, giving up the ground that they fought so hard to capture.
