About Songkran

Songkran is a term derived from the Sanskrit word saṅkrānti which translates literally to "astrological passage". It refers to the traditional New Year celebrated in several South-East Asian countries when the sun transits the constellation of Aries, the first astrological sign in the Zodiac, as reckoned by sidereal astrology.

The Songkran festival is celebrated in Thailand as the traditional New Year's Day from 13th to 15th April. During this period, Thais traditionally visit visit friends and relatives and pay respects to the elders. People who celebrate Songkran as Buddhist festival will go to a Buddhist monastry to offer prayers and donate food to monks. As Songkran is a time of cleansing and renewal, washing household Buddha images or giving their homes a thorough spring cleaning is thought to bring good luck and prosperity for the New Year.

The most evident form of celebration during Songkran is the dousing of water. Thais will flock to the streets armed with water guns, garden hoses or containers of water to drench each other and passersby. The most famous Songkran celebrations are in the northern city of Chiang Mai where it continues for six days or even longer. It has also become a party for foreigners and an enticing factor for people to visit Thailand during this festive season to "soak" in the atmosphere and immerse in the unique culture.
