Tank Commanders!

This weekend marks the 98th Anniversary of the Battle of Flers-Courcelette. If you love armoured vehicles of any shape and size, remember this date above all else... because the very first tanks rolled out into action for the very first time in this battle.

If it were not for their successful debut back then (relatively speaking - they were still just big crawling hunks of metal at the time), World of Tanks would not exist today... so we're commemorating the occasion in this week's special!

Firstly, we've got a range of things available on discount. Grab the equipment you want at a reduced price, or spend your gold on your crew - barracks slots, retraining costs and skill changes are on sale too. Afterwards, head on over to the French tech tree to browse the selection of vehicles on discount this week. The French Premium vehicles FCM 36 Pak 40 and the FCM-50t are on sale too, so get them while you can.

New missions will also be available as well this week. Some of them will offer precious consumables as rewards, but we're also putting up a special one just for this week: From 15th to 19th September, the second victory you secure each day will earn you a x2 EXP bonus for that battle. This will come in effect after the Fabulous Friday and First Victory weekend bonuses are concluded, giving you one entire week of bonus EXP.

You know what to do now, Tank Commanders!

History Feature: Battle of Flers-Courcelette

A British Mark I, the first tank ever deployed in battle.

Did you know...

  • The first tank ever to be produced was by the British, who called it the ‘Mark I’.
  • The Mark I was a prototype of a much larger vehicle that was meant to function like a battleship on land.
  • The Mark I was tested for less than 6 months before ordered to the frontlines.
  • The first tanks were originally supposed to join the Somme Offensive (the last campaign of WWI) but missed it due to delays. Instead, they were sent to assist in a battle outside two towns called Flers and Courcelette on 11th September 1916.
  • Of the 49 tanks sent, only 15 managed to participate in the actual battle. The rest were prevented from joining due to severe technical problems.
  • With the help of the 15 Mark I tanks, British and French forces captured more ground at Flers-Courcelette than any other battle in the war.
