Asia server relocating from Singapore to Hong Kong

Fellow Tankers,

Two days ago on Tuesday the 10^th, we finalized the move of our Singapore periphery to Hong Kong.

This was an important step for us to take, and followed the equally crucial launch of the ANZ periphery last October.

Based on our analysis, we expected the transition to be a smooth one, even though there is always uncertainty with routing which can only be fully tested when the server is live. To some extent, the transition went as expected. Unfortunately, we discovered that several ISP connections to the new Hong Kong server across the region were not optimized, resulting in abnormally high latency and intermittent lag spikes.

We have been working with the community to analyse connections and now know that, instead of utilising the most direct path to the Hong Kong server as was intended, several ISPs are currently routing through indirect locations such as the USA or Japan.

Next Steps

We are currently working on optimizing these connections for affected players. Several connectivity issues have already been resolved and resulted in improved ping for those players. We are looking to do so for more of them in the next few days.

Unfortunately, some of the rerouting optimizations may only be completed sometime beyond this week. We deeply apologise for any inconvenience caused.

What does this mean for me?

In truth - not much. One tiny difference is that your server choices will now be displayed as either Hong Kong or Australia, instead of the former being Singapore.

Aside from that:

Hong Kong shares the same timezone as Singapore, so no impact on timed events (e.g. Global Map).
Depending on your location and ISP, latency may become slightly higher. With that said,
- The Australia server is still available should you wish to connect to a server nearer to your location.
- Lesser chance of cables getting bitten by pesky sharks (we hope).
